Membrane and Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) are nothing more than filtration. Filtration counts on the separation of different sized particles to facilitate the process. It is not chemical, produces no waste, and has no hazardous materials or effects. The air around us is 20.9% Oxygen and 79% Nitrogen. Nitrogen molecules are larger and slower than CO, CO2 and Oxygen molecules. If we are able to separate the larger molecules from the smaller ones, we can isolate, capture and use the filtered gas. (Nitrogen.)

With PSA, we force this Nitrogen and Oxygen into a tank under pressure. This tank, or sieve bed, is filled with a filter medium; Carbon Molecular Sieve (CMS) for Nitrogen. The pressurized, excited molecules move actively throughout and around the CMS. The CMS are porous. (Like pumice or a sponge.) The holes of the CMS are so small that the Oxygen Molecules are able to go through them and get captured inside the particles, while the larger nitrogen molecules remain outside.

After allowing this separation process to go on for sometime, the free floating Nitrogen molecules are released out of the vessel at low pressure, and captured in a surge tank. When the Nitrogen has been drawn out of the tank (or sieve bed), the pressure in it is released quickly, allowing the oxygen to escape into the air and “cleansing” the CMS for the next cycle. The Sieve bed is then re-flooded with pressurized air and the cycle begins again.

We use sieve technology in all of our generators to increase the consistency of the Nitrogen delivery. The compressed feed air is fed into one sieve bed, and then the feed swings to pressurize the other sieve bed. The filter medium or CMS, adsorbs oxygen to make Nitrogen, hence the name Pressure Swing Adsorption.

Membrane technology uses a bundle of hollow fibers. These fibers have molecular size holes on the surface that are small enough to allow O2, CO2 and CO to pass out of the fiber tube while the larger N2 and Argon molecules stay trapped in the tube. At the far end of the membrane tube, the argon and N2 are captured to be used for the application while the waste molecules release into the atmosphere. Since the membrane is an open-ended system, the efficiency of O2 removal is not as good as the PSA system.

The benefit of membrane is that, if the application requires a pressure higher than 110 PSIG, the membrane can accept up to 200 PSIG with a delta p of 25 PSIG. To that end the membrane can produce 175 PSIG N2 while the PSA is limited to 110 PSIG.

It should be noted that membranes degrade in their ability to exchange gases over time. Micro particles clog the holes through which the O2, CO2 and CO are permeated. The higher the input pressure of air to the membrane, the faster the membrane degrades.

At 150 PSIG input air to the membrane, the useful life of the membrane will not exceed 7 years. The PSA will essentially permeate at the same rate and purity for the life of the system, at least 20 years.

This process is physical, and not chemical. It does not produce any byproduct, except nitrogen or oxygen rich air, which are equalized just inches from the outlet port.

      Worry Free

Inherently simple technology has brought industrial users worldwide outstanding reliability and peace of mind while providing unsurpassed levels of performance.  Low operating pressures associated with these systems increase safety and give added security in the workplace environment and serves to eliminate the need for hazardous storage.

      Control and Efficiency

Our PSA Nitrogen Generator reduces operator intervention and the high- labor cost.  Systems operate entirely automatically, in direct response to demand in the downstream distribution system.  No more worries about downtime created by late deliveries, weather related influences, unexpected empties and loss of expensive cylinders.  Elimination of supplier dependence is a key to greater control and efficiency.  In fact, multi-level savings are realized as nitrogen gas costs are paid via your electrical bill, thereby eliminating bookkeeping, purchasing, inventory record keeping, contract negotiation and other management involvement altogether.  This convenience really saves money at bottom line.
